It has been years since the American Music Awards was broadcasted on TV. The fan voted award show, featured in Las Vegas, was extremely underwhelming. Here’s what I think they did wrong:
Some of the biggest artists teased at the beginning of the show like Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter, Billie Eilish, Gracie Abrams, Chappell Roan, The Weeknd, and more were not in attendance.

I understand some of these artists are currently on tour...but we couldn’t move it to a different time of the year?
Fans were extremely bummed that Taylor Swift didn’t show at the award show. As a Swiftie who was uncovering Easter eggs, it looked like something was going to happen at the award show. The reality? Taylor was nowhere to be found, which got the internet buzzing about the award show...but not in a great way.

Despite not being at the show in Vegas, Taylor continues to be the most decorated AMAs winner.

It seemed like the focus for the show were streamers, influencers, the presenters, and legacy musicians like Janet Jackson and Rod Stewart. Then...why call it the American Music Awards if the focus isn’t ON the current music?
The artists that were in attendance like Benson Boone, Shaboozey, and Alex Warren didn’t get the love they deserved at the show. SZA was the only artist that got multiple awards and got showered with excitement from fans (and rightfully so!)
Don’t get me wrong, I thought Janet Jackson and Rod Stewart crushed their performances and deserve the hype. I just wished they had a moment where they “tossed it off” to the up and coming artists who were at the show.
Did we need a 10 minute dance number from Jennifer Lopez to open the show? Absolutely not. Do we want to see awards ACTUALLY handed out to the artists at the show? Of course we do!
The American Music Awards prides themselves as a show that is “fan voted.” We should have fans actually VOTE for what artists perform. That would make it exciting.
I think award shows need to focus on the artists! No crazy opening numbers from the hosts, no gimmicks throughout the show. I want to see artists on stage actually getting their awards. Maybe that would draw artists to attend. This was extremely disappointing as a viewer.
