CVS To Let Customers Open Locked Shelves On Their Own...With An App

They’re doing nothing about those long receipts, though.

It can seem like EVERYTHING takes longer than it should at CVS.  Even folding one of their MAMMOTH RECEIPTS.  But it sounds like they are trying to fix one problem.

You know how CVS and other places have been keeping more stuff behind locked shelves?  Well, CVS is testing a new system where YOU will be able to unlock those cabinets on your own, through their app.

But it sounds clunky.  Not only do you have to have the app on your phone, but you also have to be on the store’s WiFi . . . AND have Bluetooth turned on, so it knows what shelf you’re trying to access.

On the plus side, you don’t have to stand around waiting for an overworked employee to walk over and open it up for you, which is very inefficient.  Especially if you need MULTIPLE shelves unlocked.

But critics say this is just a back-door way of CVS forcing more engagement within their app, which collects information . . . especially if you’re needing to have location services turned on.

Also, this “locked cases” issue is a problem that THEY CREATED . . . even if they’re saying it’s necessary to curb shoplifting.

This also begs the question:  Would there be any issues if you opened a locked cabinet . . . and it didn’t close properly or something . . . and something got taken from the store?  Are they going to see that you accessed it, and come to you about the missing item?

Regardless, this system is only being tested at a few stores, for now.
